MICROBIOLOGY AND PARASITOLOGY
Medical microbiology and parasitology is a full-service laboratory offering comprehensive testing for the diagnosis of infectious diseases which may be acute or chronic. These infectious diseases are caused by a variety of microorganisms that may include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Our staff of experienced clinical microbiologists have been trained in the most cutting-edge methods for the detection and testing of microbial pathogens in the areas of bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, parasitology, virology, antimicrobial susceptibility. We also provide epidemiologic data to help hospital epidemiologists prevent, detect, investigate, and end nosocomial epidemics. The information supplied by the clinical microbiology laboratory improves clinical outcomes, decreases needless antibiotic usage, and prevents nosocomial infections when used correctly and immediately.
HAEMATOLOGY
The haematology laboratory aims to provide a comprehensive routine and emergency diagnostic service. The role of the haematology laboratory is to investigate haematological disorders including those which affect the white cells, red cells, platelets and haemostasis.
The laboratory tests done in haematology includes the following: Full blood count, coagulation studies (Prothrombin Time, Activated Partial thromboplastin Time, Prothrombin Time, bleeding and Clotting Time), Genotyping, Blood grouping and Cross matching, Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate, Blood Film for sickle cell anaemia, leukaemia, thalassaemia etc.
CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY
The chemical pathology laboratory uses the chemical and biochemical mechanisms of the body to diagnose diseases and to manage patients, mostly through the analysis of body fluids such as blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) among others. Chemical pathologists have a detailed understanding of biochemical processes and changes that occur in disease.
Our chemical pathology investigations include: Electrolytes, lipids profile, liver and kidney function tests, urinalysis along with other fluids such as CSF and effusions; fecal analysis for detection of gastrointestinal disorder; Hormonal studies for diagnosis of endocrine disorders; Toxicology studies for diagnosis of drugs of abuse and other chemicals.
